Type 2 Diabetes


Type 2 diabetes or also called obesity related diabetes or Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM) can strike anyone regardless of age. Generally, the initial symptoms of type 2 diabetes can not be detected. In fact, one of three people with type 2 diabetes do not know if she was suffering from the disease.
Diabetes is a chronic condition when body's ability to convert food into energy become lower. These conditions increase blood sugar levels which in turn increases the risk of heart disease, blindness, and other serious complications. In the case of diabetes, the cells can not absorb glucose properly. This resulted in increased levels of glucose in the blood. Insulin resistance in the body makes insulin levels become excessive. However, excess insulin is not used by the muscles, liver, and fat cells.
Facing Risk Factors:
A.   Controlled Risks
·      Overweight.
·      Unhealthy lifestyle.
·      Cholesterol and high blood fats
·      High blood pressure.
·      Smoking.
B.   Uncontrolled Risks
Race or ethnicity:  Racial and ethnic like Hispanics, African Americans, Native Americans, and Asians have type 2 diabetes risk higher than other racial and ethnic groups.

Heredity:  The risk of diabetes is quite high if the family, parents or siblings you also have a history of this disease.

The age factor:  The risk of type 2 diabetes will increase when you reach the age of 45 years.

C.    Risk Factors for Diabetes in Women
1.    If you have diabetes during pregnancy, the risk to be a type 2 diabetes is higher. Women who gave birth to a baby weighing more than 4 kg are also at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
2.    Condition of polycystic ovary syndrome causes insulin resistance which leads to diabetes also.

Preventing Type 2 Diabetes
Change bad habits into a better direction will help you avoid the risk of type 2 diabetes. Here is a way to reduce the risk of diabetes as well as to ward off heart disease:
·      Eat a healthy diet.
·      Exercise 30 minutes five days a week.
·      Maintain a healthy weight.
·      Consultation with your doctor about the symptoms of pre diabetes.
